Brazilian photographer Mario Cravo Neto was born in Bahia in 1947. As a child the influence of mixed cultures and religions, typical of that area of Brazil, deeply affects his imagery. Neto has always been in strict contact with the art world his father was a reserved scuIptor, and the extensive travels to Europe give to a young Mario the chance to see masterworks from the most important art collections. Neto portraits people in interiors with dark light: subjects emerge from the obscurity and create in the viewer a sense of wonder, as they unveil the melting pot of cultures and religious beliefs: his photos have the unquestionable characteristic to take the viewer into a Iong journey back to the cultural roots of Brazil.
