Born on July 26, 1928 in Paris, Elliott Erwitt spent his childhood in Milan. In 1938 his family moved to Paris and then emigrated to New York the next year, finally settling in Los Angeles in 1941. He became interested in photography as a boy in Hollywood. In 1944, while still in high school, he found a job in a darkroom. In 1948 he moved to New York, where he met Edward Steichen, Robert Capa and Roy Stryker. After spending 1949 travelling in France and Italy, Erwitt went back to New York and started working as a professional photographer. He joined the army in 1951 and continued to take photographs when stationed in Germany and France.
