After the first exhibition in 2006 in Milan, Rinko Kawauchi returns at Fondazione Sozzani, with a site-specific exhibition in Paris on the occasion of the Photo Days.
Rinko Kawauchi (1972) is renowned for her kindness and brightness of her color photographs that reveal, since her first works, the mystery, the genius, the fragility, and the strength of life in all its forms.
Her gaze also rests on the immediate environment’s delicate beings, be it the flora, wildlife, or its family members,
forces of nature consisting of volcanoes and glaciers formed over long periods of time.
The unique sensitivity of his photography reveals the links between these subjects, which all shine with the same vital splendor. The exhibition imagined by Rinko Kawauchi consists of a spectacular installation, occupying the entire ceiling height of this former industrial building, from a video and a series of photographs selected from his latest series, M/E, An Interlinking, and Illuminance. M/E is an ongoing series since 2019, which has multiple layers of meanings. The letters mean “Mother” and “Earth”, if combining to form both “Mother Earth” and it first glance, the images in the series depict volcanoes, Iceland’s ice pack and the snowy landscapes of Hokkaido that may seem remote and unrelated to the daily scenes of the COVID-19 pandemic that accompany them.
Yet, these two types of scenarios describe events that are happening on the planet we live on, and Kawauchi’s talent makes us aware of the bond that unites them. This exhibition addresses the heart of the questions they always have supports Kawauchi’s work and invites the viewer to reconsider several questions about the functioning of human life and our relationship with nature. The exhibition presented in Tokyo in 2022 was cited as one of the top 10 of the year by the online magazine of Art net.
