Manuel Alvarez Bravo is self-taught: he only attended elementary school, but was interested in philosophy, literature, art history, painting and mathematics, and ended up expressing himself in photography and becoming a great master of modern photography. Encouraged by Tina Modotti at first, he took photographs that fascinated Edward Weston, Paul Strand and André Breton, including “La buena fama durmiendo” in the international surrealism exhibition in Mexico City and Paris. He taught whole generations of Latin American photographers to “see” and interpret reality, and his style influenced photographers the world over.
