10 Corso Como Gallery and Fondazione Sozzani present Tony Viramontes: bold, beautiful and damned, an overview of Viramontes’ iconic fashion illustrations, mixed media collages, and photographs from the 1980s curated by fashion journalist Dean Rhys Morgan. The exhibition is on view from September 8th through November 10th, 2019. When Tony Viramontes’ work appeared in the late 1970s, it was very different from the work of his contemporaries. “Tony was the enfant terrible of fashion illustration. His strong and direct drawing style was a marked contrast to the whispered, pastelly, WASPy visuals of the time,” Rhys Morgan says. “There was an insolence about his women. They were very hard and aggressive. Casting was very important to him. The last thing he wanted was a pretty face and a standard set of measurements.”

La mostra è curata da Nathalie Herschdorfer, direttore del Musée des Beaux-Arts Le Locle in Svizzera. L’opera di Prager è cinematografica e trae ispirazione da ciò che la circonda, dalle esperienze personali, dalla street photography, dalla cultura pop e dai film. Applica una serie di elementi stilistici che richiamano i film noir, i thriller, il melodramma e i polizieschi. Le donne sono spesso le protagoniste del suo lavoro, guidate dall’emotività. Attraverso l’uso di colori saturi e di un immaginario vagamente familiare, Prager è in grado di ricreare un proprio mondo originale in cui esplora temi oscuri in modo seducente e inquietante. Le sue radici nascono dalla tradizione fotografica di William Eggleston, Diane Arbus e Cindy Sherman, maestri nell'arte di “congelare” un indefinibile momento del quotidiano. Il lavoro di Prager consiste in imponenti scenografie e immagini di grande formato dai colori saturi. Le sue fotografie possono essere viste come narrazioni di un singolo fotogramma che catturano storie enigmatiche definite entro i limiti della cornice. I suoi lavori sono caratterizzati dall'assenza di una narrativa lineare."
