Xanti Schawinsky (1904 – 1979) dedicated most of his artistic career investigating the concept of “Spectodrama”, a multidisciplinary approach to theatre in which the relationship between painting, photography and recitation was indis- soluble. “Spectodrama” was first mentioned by Schawinsky when he was a fine art student of Wasilly Kandisky, Paul Klee and Walter Gropius; the concept was then developed when he became director of the theatrical laboratory at the Bauhaus School of Dessau. Those years of theatrical experiments and scenic innovations — mainly brought by Scha- winsky’s ingenious use of the photographic medium — are collected in this well illustrated catalogue; the small size of the edition reminds the form of a diary in which we can find the ideas and the most intimate observations of Schawinsky.
