Roger Ballen was born in New York in 1950; his photographic career made its turning point when he left the U.S. at the end of the 70’s and started to travel extensively around the world and then settled down in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1982. The catalogue presents a selection of works from 1989 to 2002, when Ballen spent most of his time depicting the emarginated social condition of workers and fairness in suburban and rural areas of South Africa. Ballen portrayed people in the miserable set of their houses, with b/w film and with the use of flash, combining an approach proper to reportage photography with his personal inspiration of dreamlike visions.
